Start with public health (bacteria)

Many Ontario public health units offer free or low-cost bacteriological testing for private wells — typically total coliforms and E. coli. Programs, bottle pickup locations and submission windows vary by health unit, so check your local public health website for current instructions.

What free testing usually does not cover

Free public-health bottles are rarely a full chemistry panel. Hardness, iron, manganese, sulphur, nitrates, lead, arsenic, uranium and PFAS almost always require a paid accredited laboratory.

When free is enough

  • Annual bacteria check with no taste, stain or odour issues
  • After a flood or well work, as a first pass for potability
  • Confirming a chlorination / shock treatment cleared bacteria

When to pay for a lab

  • Designing iron, softener, UV or RO equipment
  • Real-estate deals that need metals and chemistry
  • Known regional risks (arsenic, uranium, PFAS near airports or industry)
  • Persistent staining, rotten-egg smell or unexplained illness

Trusted paid labs in Ontario

Independent options we recommend over free dealer tests include Paracel Laboratories, Caduceon Environmental, Bureau Veritas (formerly Maxxam) and AGAT. Browse our lab directory, then use Find a Water Test to match free vs paid options to your postal code.
