Clearer water. Better taste.

Sediment filters catch grit and rust; carbon reduces chlorine, chloramine, taste and odour. Together they're the backbone of most municipal whole-home and under-sink setups.

  • Sediment cartridges and spin-downs for particulates
  • Catalytic carbon for tough chloramine
  • Point-of-entry or point-of-use options

When you need carbon & sediment filters

  • Pool-like chlorine smell in showers and glassware
  • Grit, cloudiness or rust after watermain work
  • Protecting softeners, RO membranes or fixtures from particulates
  • Municipal chloramine that basic fridge filters barely touch

Sediment filtration

Sediment filters strain particles — sand, pipe scale, rust flakes — before they scratch fixtures or clog downstream carbon, softener resin or RO membranes. Ratings (e.g. 5 micron) and style (cartridge, spin-down, backwashing) depend on how dirty the supply gets.

Carbon for chlorine and chloramine

Activated carbon adsorbs chlorine and many taste-and-odour compounds. Chloramine (chlorine bonded with ammonia), used by many Canadian cities, needs catalytic carbon and enough contact time — a small under-sink cartridge is often undersized for whole-home chloramine.

Tank-style carbon beds handle higher flow; cartridge systems are compact and easy to service for lighter duty or point-of-use.

Whole-home vs kitchen-only

Kitchen carbon improves drinking water. Whole-home carbon improves every shower and tap. Many homeowners do both: point-of-entry carbon/sediment plus kitchen RO for dissolved contaminants.

Typical cost in Canada

Point-of-use carbon/sediment setups can be a few hundred dollars installed. Whole-home catalytic carbon systems commonly land from roughly $1,000–$4,000+ depending on tank size and plumbing.

Maintenance

Cartridges are typically annual (or sooner with heavy sediment). Monitor pressure drop — a sudden loss of flow often means a clogged sediment stage. Tank carbon media is replaced on a longer multi-year cycle.

Common questions

Will a fridge filter replace whole-home carbon?
Fridge and pitcher filters help drinking water only. Whole-home carbon improves showers, laundry and every tap.
Chlorine vs chloramine — does it matter?
Yes. Chloramine needs catalytic carbon and adequate contact time. Standard carbon alone is often undersized for chloramine cities.
Does carbon remove hardness?
No. Hardness needs a softener or different conditioner technology.
Can carbon remove lead or PFAS?
Some specialty carbons reduce certain contaminants, but for lead and PFAS many homes rely on certified RO or filters with explicit certifications. Ask for claims in writing.
