Hard water signs: how to know if you need a softener

Spotting on glass, scale on taps, dry skin and short appliance life are classic hard-water signs across much of Canada.

Common hard water clues

  • White crust on faucets and shower doors
  • Soap that will not lather
  • Spots on dishes and glassware
  • Scratchy laundry and faded colours
  • Water heaters and dishwashers dying early

Why Canada sees so much hardness

Limestone geology and many municipal sources deliver calcium and magnesium. Southern Ontario, the Prairies and parts of Alberta are especially hard.

What a softener does

Ion-exchange softeners swap hardness minerals for sodium or potassium. They do not disinfect or remove iron staining at high levels — pair with other stages when needed.
