Why PFAS is in the news

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances ("forever chemicals") persist in the environment. Health Canada established a drinking-water objective of 30 ng/L for the sum of 25 specified PFAS. This is a precautionary objective while formal guidelines are being reassessed, not a finalized maximum acceptable concentration.

What RO removes

Some point-of-use granular activated carbon systems certified to NSF/ANSI 53 and reverse-osmosis systems certified to NSF/ANSI 58 carry specific PFAS-reduction claims. Certification to a standard alone is not enough: verify the product's exact contaminant claim and keep replacement media on schedule.

Whole-home vs under-sink

Point-of-use treatment covers drinking and cooking water, not showers or every household tap. Whole-home carbon may reduce some PFAS when properly designed, but performance varies with PFAS type, water chemistry, flow and media life. Confirm performance with paired samples from an accredited PFAS laboratory before and after treatment.
