Stop acidic water from eating your pipes.

Soft, low-pH water on the BC coast and many Atlantic wells leaches copper and leaves blue-green stains. Calcite neutralizers raise pH into a safe range.

  • Calcite (and calcite/magnesia) neutralizing filters
  • Protects copper plumbing and fixtures
  • Common first step before UV on acidic wells

When you need acid neutralizers

  • Blue-green stains on sinks and fixtures
  • Pinhole leaks in copper plumbing
  • Well or cistern pH in the mid-5s to mid-6s
  • Coastal soft water with known corrosivity

Why low pH damages homes

Acidic water dissolves copper and other metals from plumbing. You see turquoise staining first; later you get pinholes and elevated copper at the tap. Soft coastal municipal water and many Atlantic/NS/NB wells sit in this zone.

How calcite neutralizers work

Water passes through crushed calcite (calcium carbonate) or a calcite/magnesia blend. Media slowly dissolves, raising pH toward roughly 7–8. Larger flows or very low pH sometimes need soda-ash injection instead of a passive filter.

Neutralizers add some hardness — your installer will plan softening if grains climb too high afterward.

Order of treatment

On acidic wells, neutralizing often comes early in the train so later equipment and plumbing are protected. UV and RO still need clear water and correct upstream stages.

Typical cost in Canada

Residential calcite neutralizer installs commonly fall in a similar band to other tank filters — often roughly $1,000–$3,000+ depending on size, bypass plumbing and whether a softener is added.

Maintenance

Media is consumed and must be topped up or replaced. Skipping refills lets pH drift back down and corrosion resume.

Common questions

Will a neutralizer fix hardness?
No — it can slightly increase hardness. Softening is a separate step when grains are high.
Is blue-green staining always low pH?
It's a classic sign of copper corrosion from aggressive water, but testing pH and metals confirms it.
Do I need this on Metro Vancouver city water?
Some homes do when plumbing shows corrosion symptoms — a water test and plumbing inspection guide the call.
