Assume contamination until tested
Floodwater can carry sewage, chemicals and debris into wells, cisterns and damaged plumbing. Boil-water advisories may apply — follow local public health.
Immediate actions
- Stop using untreated well water for drinking
- Arrange bacteria (and often chemistry) testing
- Ask a pro about shock chlorination and system inspection
- Replace damaged filters and flush lines after clearance
Treatment gear after floods
UV, sediment and carbon stages may need service. Do not rely on a clogged filter as disinfection.
