Water softener vs filter: which do you need?
Softeners fight hardness. Filters fight taste, sediment, iron, chlorine and more. Most Canadian homes eventually want both — plus kitchen RO.

Softener job
Removes calcium and magnesium that cause scale and soap scum. Protects plumbing and appliances. Does not make unsafe water safe.
Filter job
Depends on media: sediment, carbon, iron, specialised PFAS stages, and so on. Filters target specific problems your test or symptoms reveal.
Typical Canadian stack
- Softener (if hard)
- Whole-home carbon or iron stage as needed
- Under-sink RO for drinking water
