City water vs well water treatment in Canada
Municipal water is disinfected but often hard or chlorinated. Wells need testing for bacteria, iron, sulphur and more before any install.

City / municipal
Usually safe microbiologically at the plant. Homeowners still add softeners for hardness, carbon for chlorine taste, and RO for drinking water and PFAS concerns.
Private well
You are the water utility. Test at least twice a year for bacteria and basic chemistry. Treatment trains are longer: sediment → iron/sulphur → softener → UV → optional RO.
Cottage / cistern
Seasonal use, storage tanks and surface water raise bacteria and sediment risk. UV and pretreatment are common.
